Ministry of Education Organizes Scientific Workshop on Developing General Education in Yemen – Mukalla City

Mukalla, Hadhramout — The Ministry of Education, in partnership with Hadhramout Foundation – Human Development, organized a scientific workshop on the development of general education in Yemen, under the patronage of Prime Minister Salem bin Buraik and in the presence of the Minister of Education, Mr. Tareq Salem Al-Akbari.

The workshop aimed to devise immediate solutions to enhance teachers’ conditions, ensure the continuity of education, and draw from successful international educational experiences. Participants included the Presidents of Hadhramout and Seiyun Universities, senior officials from the Ministry of Education, academic leaders, and civil society education partners.

In his opening remarks, Minister Al-Akbari emphasized the importance of diagnosing educational realities through scientific approaches to propose effective solutions and elevate the quality of education. He stressed that the workshop outcomes must align with the Ministry’s vision for quality assurance and directly address field needs, highlighting the critical role of teachers as the cornerstone of the educational process.

The Minister called for collective responsibility towards education, underscoring its significance as a national, ethical, and religious duty, while acknowledging the efforts of education personnel across Yemen amid challenging circumstances. He also commended local authorities and supporting organizations, notably Hadhramout Foundation, for their contributions to the workshop’s success.

Hadhramout Deputy Governor for Technical Affairs, Eng. Ameen Barziq, reiterated the commitment to education despite ongoing challenges, expressing hope that the workshop would yield actionable recommendations for the sector’s advancement.

Eng. Tareq Balkhashar, Executive General Manager of Hadhramout Foundation, affirmed the Foundation’s dedication to supporting educational initiatives and highlighted the necessity of aligning efforts between government and private sectors to overcome prevailing challenges.

The workshop featured key presentations and working papers addressing:

1. The current state and development strategies for general education.

2. Leveraging global best practices to enhance Yemen’s education system.

3. The role of civil society organizations in educational development.

4. Integrating 21st-century skills into Yemen’s general education curricula.

The sessions included comprehensive discussions and interventions by participants, culminating in a set of recommendations. These included urgent appeals to state institutions, local authorities, donors, and education partners to prioritize improving teachers’ living and working conditions as a national imperative, along with calls to organize a National Education Conference to further address systemic challenges.
